What a quandary. Still having pristine packaging for both my old iPhone and iPod could I get away with wrapping up either for my valentine? Obviously I wasn’t going to give her both. Before making this (clearly bad) choice I was saved by M&A when I saw the high volume tech device recycler, Redeem Holdings Limited acquire Eazyfone Limited (trades as Envirophone). This followed the investment by German based, Tech Investment House, High-Tech Gründerfonds (HTGF) in Recycling Angel in September. Last summer we also saw Outerwell (Previously Coinstar) acquire ecoATM for $350m. EcoATM makes automated self-serve kiosk systems for recycling mobile devices like phones, tablets, and MP3 players, without the need of shipping your gadgets off to a company to inspect before sending you your money. Surely it’s just a matter of time before we get these kiosks popping up around the UK too but in the meantime, the online sites will have to suffice. Over the coming months we are expecting further consolidation within this fragmented market place, with likely appetite coming from both domestic and overseas tech focussed WEEE (Waste Electronic and Electrical Equipment) operators.

So why not do your bit – clear up some much needed space in your top drawers; make yourself some cash; help less fortunate tech lovers in developing countries and help to minimise the impact on planet earth by recycling your old brick. That’s what I did anyway and I was pleasantly surprised by the speed and ease of using the service. And it left me with sufficient cash to fund petrol station flowers and a KFC with plenty left over for yours truly.

P.S. If you’re not as tight as me and are looking to treat your techy valentine to something more than a used ipod this year, check out:  http://www.heavy.com/tech/2014/02/top-10-best-tech-gifts-for-valentines/ for some gift ideas. My favourite has to be the USB/ wifi hotspot cufflinks.
