In May 2017 15 members of corporate finance firm Clearwater International endured the 300 mile bike ride from London to Paris, fundraising for the READ Foundation – a charity that provides school places for children affected by poverty (https://readfoundation.org.uk/). The cyclist team’s sponsorship target was £15,000, which they exceeded.
The grand total raised was £17,906, collectively from friends, family, colleagues and clients.
The fund is being used by the READ Foundation for a School Enhancement Programme to help over 300 children in Gori, Muzaffarabad. Due to the high poverty rates in this area, money for education is challenging. With the average literacy rate as low as 60% and a mere 40% among women and girls, the READ Foundation seeks to provide cost-effective and sustainable solutions to the problems, by providing quality and equity in education in rural and hard-to-reach areas.
An example of some of the provisions that Clearwater’s fundraising is helping provide include: completion of the remaining construction works on four recently constructed rooms and refurbishment of 11 classrooms; age and grade-specific classroom furniture for 110 students, including syllabi-based teaching-learning materials and science laboratory equipment and supplies for the subjects of Physics, Chemistry and Biology; provision of a 1,000-gallon water tank; and upgrading the assembly and play area.
The foundation is looking to complete these within the next 6-8months. Clearwater International remains in close contact with the READ Foundation and receives regular updates on how the project is unfolding.
The Clearwater team consisted of 15 international members including: Alex Brindley, Carl Houghton, Chris Smith, Cian McComb, David Weavers, Francisco Gomez, John Curtin, John Jensen, Marcus Archer, Mandy Allen, Michael Reeves, Natasha Eden, Ruth Farrington, Simon Bang Mikkelsen and Tom Barnwell.
