Pneumatics and hydraulics
A number of key trends are emerging in the market1 such as OEMs reducing their number of suppliers as larger companies chase economies of scale and a broader product portfolio.
There is also continued pressure on companies to reduce their carbon footprint and government incentives are spurring demand for energy efficient solutions.
Hydraulic equipment continues to dominate drilling applications in the oil and gas sector thanks to higher power-to-size ratios as oil exploration moves deeper in oceans and into harsher environments. The hydraulic fracturing equipment market is also considered a major new opportunity.
Meanwhile, the integration of electronics with hydraulics is expanding the use of hydraulics in mechatronic systems in such diverse industries as agriculture, aerospace and industrial automation, while the need to improve land productivity and yields will fuel the demand for mechanisation, primarily in developing countries.
A recent transaction in this segment was US-based Dana Inc’s acquisition of Brevini Group SpA of Italy, a manufacturer of fluid power and power transmission products including advanced electronic control systems, hydraulic pumps, motors, planetary gearboxes and valves for mobile and off-highway applications.
The $340m (€290m) transaction complements Dana’s expertise in cylindrical gearing and planetary hub gears. The group will also gain access to technology for tracked vehicles, as well as increase its offerings for off-highway driveline systems and develop its presence in the electric and hybrid vehicle markets.
